Determination of persistent organochlorine pesticides in beak fluids of seabirds.
Persistent organochlorine pesticides in the beak fluid (BF) of the California Least Tern (Eudyptula minor californica) on San Nicolas Island were determined to assess potential beak fluid toxicity. BF was collected from birds in colonies on San Nicolas Island (CA) in July, 2010, and in Sierra Point (CA) in December, 2010. Chlorfenapyr was the only organochlorine pesticide quantified at concentrations above detection limits in the San Nicolas Island BF. Deltamethrin was the only pesticide quantified at concentrations above detection limits in the Sierra Point BF. Both pesticides were present in beak fluid from partially molted birds and from molted birds at levels consistent with concentrations in the blood and liver. BF had much lower concentrations of chlorfenapyr and deltamethrin than blood and liver. Using the same analyses, neither organochlorine pesticide was quantified in the BF of the Yellow-footed Gull (Larus michahellis) from San Nicolas Island or Sierra Point.//
