Interpretive Summary: The major livestock diseases are milk, gastro, and respiratory syndromes. This paper discusses and offers a model for syndromes of cows, a primary dairy animal, and calves, a secondary dairy animal. The model is based on clinical, pathological, and gross pathological observations, laboratory data, and medical treatment information to help veterinarians and public health practitioners identify, diagnose, and treat diseases affecting these two critical dairy species.
Milk, gastro, and respiratory syndromes are the major livestock diseases. The milk syndrome is characterized by fever, involuntary weight loss, ketonuria, and unthriftiness. The gastro syndrome is characterized by loss of appetite, weight loss, pain abdomen, abdominal distension, vomiting, diarrhoea, and death. The respiratory syndrome is characterized by fever, cough, fine white tracheal froth, and depression. The diseases share many features and gross pathological, histopathological, and bacteriological findings. The epidemiology of these diseases are similar. These diseases cause considerable loss of animal productivity, and are economically important diseases. The primary dairy cow has been reported as the primary dairy animal in many countries. Similar to the milk syndrome, the gastro syndrome is characterized by fever, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and loss of mobility. The major differences are that the disease has a much higher case fatality rate in dairy cows than in calves. In the gastro syndrome, there is little or no tracheal froth, and the disease is more serious in calves than in dairy cows. Similar to the milk syndrome, the respiratory syndrome in calves is characterized by fever, loss of appetite, depression, and coughing. The main difference is the lack of froth in dairy cows, and the lack of tracheal froth in dairy cows. The major laboratory abnormalities and predisposing factors are similar in dairy cows and calves, although dairy cows are more likely to have pyrexia and CBC abnormal than dairy calves. There is a greater degree of opportunity for disease in dairy calves and beef cattle than in dairy cows and sheep. In dairy calves and calves, the most common pathogen is Pasteurella haemolytica and in dairy cows and cattle, the most common pathogen is Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B). Since the cost
